The Fore River Sanctuary
A natural treasure within our
Stroudwater Neighborhood.
The Fore River Sanctuary. This Stroudwater Neighborhood gem offers a little nature escape with the added convenience of being within the city limits. Bird life, White Tailed deer, and other small animals inhabit this unique 85-acre area. Managed by the Maine Audubon Society and The Portland Trails, this Sanctuary is where the Fore River meets the ocean and creates both grassy marshland as well as sloping forests in which a number of hardwood trees provide colorful contrast to stands of hemlock and white spruce.

Throughout the Sanctuary is a winding 2.5 mile trail system maintained by The Portland Trails non-profit trust, which oversees 70 miles of trails and green spaces throughout Greater Portland.
Jewell Falls
The trail system passes within sight of Jewell Falls, Portland’s only natural 50 foot waterfall between Stroudwater and Nason’s Corner, near the NW side of the Sanctuary.
